Buying Guide

Our recommendation

Callaway Golf Women’s REVA Complete Golf Set is our top-scoring pick in Womens Golf Club Set, at 9.9/10 (driver: Yes).

Cobra Golf 2021 Women's Fly XL Complete Set sits just 0.2 behind at 9.7, close enough that the deciding factor is usually which specification matters more to you (fairway woods: 3-wood, 5-wood, 7-wood).

Both scores are our editors’ assessment of published specifications, pricing and terms against the criteria in our rating methodology — they are not aggregated customer reviews.

Box set or built bag

A complete boxed set bundles woods, hybrids, irons, a wedge, a putter and a bag for less than the cost of buying the pieces separately, and for a genuine beginner that is usually the right decision. The clubs are designed to be forgiving, you get everything needed to play immediately, and you avoid spending heavily on equipment before you know whether the game suits you.

The trade-off is that box sets use consistent, generic specifications throughout, and the components are typically a tier below what you would choose individually. Once you play regularly and your swing settles, replacing clubs one at a time — usually starting with the driver and putter — is the natural progression.

What is actually in the box

Most women's sets include a driver, a fairway wood, one or two hybrids, irons from around 6 or 7 through 9, a pitching wedge and sometimes a sand wedge, plus a putter. Note what is missing: long irons are deliberately replaced by hybrids, which are far easier to launch, and a full complement of wedges is not included. The rules permit fourteen clubs, so a set of ten or eleven leaves room to add later — most commonly a gap or sand wedge, which is the club that most improves scoring for a developing player.

Shaft flex, and a common misconception

Shafts flex during the swing, and matching that flex to how fast you swing affects both distance and accuracy. Clubs marketed as "ladies flex" are the most flexible standard option, designed for slower swing speeds, and for many women that is genuinely correct.

But flex should follow swing speed, not gender. A woman with an athletic background and a fast swing may be badly served by ladies flex, losing control because the shaft is too soft, and would be better in a regular flex. Conversely a slower-swinging player of any description benefits from more flexible, lighter shafts. If you have access to a launch monitor at a range or shop, a few minutes measuring driver swing speed removes the guesswork entirely, and it is the single most valuable measurement in club selection.

Related: most women's sets use graphite shafts throughout, which are lighter than steel and help generate clubhead speed. That is usually the right choice, and worth keeping when you upgrade.

Length and grip: fit by body, not by label

Women's clubs are typically built about an inch shorter than men's standard, which suits average height but is only an average. The relevant measurement is not height alone but wrist-to-floor distance, taken standing naturally in your normal shoes, which accounts for arm length. A tall player with long arms may need standard or even longer clubs; a shorter player may need them shortened further.

Clubs that are too long encourage standing too far from the ball and swinging on a flat plane; too short and you crowd the ball and hit the ground behind it. Grip size matters similarly — a grip too large for your hands restricts wrist release. Grips are inexpensive to change and a sensible first adjustment on any set.

Forgiveness: what makes a club easier to hit

Beginner and improver clubs are designed around three ideas worth recognising in a description. Cavity-back or hollow-body irons move weight to the perimeter, which reduces how much the club twists on off-centre strikes, so mishits lose less distance and curve less. Low centre of gravity and wider soles help get the ball airborne, which is the main difficulty most new players have. And higher lofts — including a driver at a higher loft than a low-handicap player would use — launch the ball higher and straighter with a slower swing.

None of this is a compromise you should feel apologetic about. Forgiving clubs are simply easier to play well, and plenty of experienced golfers use them.

New, used, and getting fitted

The used market is strong for golf clubs because equipment lasts and models turn over yearly, so last season's set often sells at a substantial discount. When buying used, check the grooves on irons for wear, look for dents on wood crowns and soles, inspect shafts for cracks near the head, and confirm the shaft flex and length rather than assuming.

A common assumption is that fittings are only for good players. In practice a basic fitting is arguably more valuable for a beginner, because it prevents years of compensating for equipment that does not fit. Many shops offer a short fitting free or credited against a purchase, and even a brief session establishing your flex, length and lie is worthwhile. If a full fitting is not practical, buy from a retailer with a genuine returns policy and hit the clubs on a range before committing.

Specifications, set compositions and fitting services vary by manufacturer and retailer. Confirm shaft flex, club length and what the set actually contains before purchase.
